Fine Nib and Super Brush Nib means versatility
Copic Sketch Markers and Sets – $5.85
from: Blick Art Materials
Copic Sketch markers are artist favorites for many reasons. One of them is the dual brush nibs. The Copic Sketch markers have both a fine nib and a super brush nib. The fine nib is perfect for your detail work. It is tapered, so depending on the angle you hold it and the amount of pressure you can change your mark. It gives you the ability to vary the thickness of your fine lines. The other nib is the Super Brush Nib. The Super Brush Nib is a chisel shape. That means that it has a wide and flat shape. When used in one direction it creates a wide and flat line. The other direction creates a thinning line. My rotating the marker are you draw you can create really a really cool line that varies in thicknesses. This nib is also great for covering large areas in color. The Copic Sketch Marker is double ended. This means that each end has a cap. The Super Brush Nib is at one end and the Standard fine Nib is at the other. They share an ink reservoir.
Changing Nibs and Mixing Colors in the Copic 25th Anniversary Set
One of the really amazing features of Copic Sketch markers is the ability to change nibs. This is one of the reasons why they are so popular. If your marker doesn’t have a sharp edge anymore, you can change it. Using special tweezers your pull out the nib. The new nib can be put back in. This will greatly extend the lifespan of your markers. There is also a medium nib available. You can replace the fine nib with the medium if you want. This will give you a slightly bolder line.
Another cool feature of these markers is that they are refillable. If you are like me, you probably use colors at a different rate. That means if you start running low on your favorite colors, you can refill them. The full range of Copic Sketch colors is available. This sure beats going out and buying new markers.
Making your own custom colors has got to be the coolest feature of these markers. You can actually mix different inks together in the marker to make your own unique blends. Copic actually makes an empty marker just for this reason. I would recommend getting a few of them. That way you can make all kinds of unique colors. This will really help to set your work apart from the rest.

Some of the other marker sets that I like
The Copic 25th anniversary set is excellent. There are many other great marker sets on the market. Here are some of the best ones that I have found.
Blick Studio Brush Markers
Blick Studio Brush Markers and Sets – $3.40
from: Blick Art Materials
Blick Studio Brush Markers are a great alternative if you are looking for something a little more affordable. The are also double ended markers that come in a wide range of colors. These markers come in several different sets. These include a 6, 12, 24, 48, and 96 marker set. You can also buy them individually. While they may not have the same name cachet as Copic. The savings per marker definitely adds up if you are buying a lot of them. Great for students and anyone looking for a less expensive alternative.
Prismacolor Premier 12 Marker Set
Prismacolor Premier Double-Ended Brush Tip Markers and Sets – $30.42
from: Blick Art Materials
Prismacolor is another very popular marker brand. Many professionals and amateurs alike love their products. I have had the luxury of using their 200-color set. The range of colors is amazing. What I really like about this set, is that it has a pointed brush and a fine tip. This would be a great set for artists who do more detail work. The brush tip also allows for a certain looseness. This isn’t achievable with more rigid tips.
Chartpak Tri-Nib Set K
Chartpak Ad Marker Sets – $87.09
from: Blick Art Materials
Chartpak Art Director markers are a bit different then the rest of the markers on this list. The rest of them are dual ended and dual tipped. These Chartpak markers actually manage combine 3 different tips into one Nib. The use a very special shape to achieve this. It may look a little strange at first. Once you realize how versatile it can be you will probably change your mind! Not having to constantly pop the lids on and off is a major time savor. In the one nib you get the following nibs depending on the angle that you hold the marker:
- Fine, for detail work
- Medium, the most versatile angle
- Broad, for covering large areas
These are honestly one of the coolest looking markers I have seen in a while.
