Underpainting is the initial layers of a painting. Usually painted with relatively lean paint. It provides the structure for subsequent layers. It can be done tonally or with color. Parts of it may or may not remain visible in the completed painting. Layers of opaque paint, scumbles, and glazes are added on top of it.
