Flemish Method

The Flemish Method is a method of indirect painting using glazes popular with Flemish artists during the renaissance. It involves making a detailed drawing in ink onto a white ground. Then an imprimatura or toned ground layer is applied. On top of this a tonal underpainting using burnt umber is developed. Then this underpainting is further refined in black, white, and grey in the dead layer. Finally, glazes of transparent color are applied on top of the monochrome underpainting.
